Seniors

Elderly Befriending  Programme

CHANGE Community Services in partnership with Lions Home (Bedok) seek to provide targeted social support through befriending to residents having little to no social-emotional support from family or friends. It is through these simple acts of kindness; listening without judgement or prejudice, showing care and concern, and sharing in mutually enjoyable activities that the feelings of loneliness, isolation, feeling of dependence and the feeling of being a burden are elevated.

Opportunities to volunteer:
  • Befriender:  To enable a more sustained and deeper impact on both the volunteers and beneficiaries, we encourage volunteers to consider a minimal commitment of 1 time every 2 weeks for 6 months. Volunteers can, however, choose to visit more frequently (e.g. 1 time every week or 2 times every week, etc.) if willing and able to for the duration of their commitment.
    • Criteria: Befrienders must be at least 15 years of age or older and have the heart to work with the elderly.
    • Compassion and a heart to serve.
    • Time to commit on at least a 6-month basis, renewable thereafter.

Nursing Home Enrichment Programme

Our Nursing Home Enrichment Programme is tasked primarily with the purpose of promoting healthy social interactions, physical mobility, and cognitive function.  These are achieved through a variety of activities.  Activities include Music, Singing, Drama, Arts & Crafts, Games, Food, and simply seating down and listening.

Opportunities to volunteer:
  • Group Organiser: Organise and manage group volunteers and programme.
    • Criteria: Group organisers must be at least 16 years or above. Group organisers must be able to locate and organise a group of volunteers (usually a group of 10 volunteers or more is suggested), plan enrichment programme based on guidelines provided by both partnering nursing homes as well as CHANGE management and conduct the enrichment programme based on the submitted and approved programme proposal.
    • Commitment: Ad hoc basis with the opportunity for longer-term commitments
  • Befriender: Assist in the conduct of the programme and provide moral and social support to the elderly residents of the home.
    • Criteria: Befrienders must be at least 16 years of age or older and have the heart to work with the elderly. Children that are accompanied by adults are welcome.
    • Commitment: Ad hoc basis with the opportunity for longer-term commitments
